- WELCOME TO UNDERSEA ADVENTURE!
-
- Thank you for purchasing Undersea Adventure. We hope to send you off
- on the greatest adventure of all . . .
-
- This "README" file has some additional information and late-breaking
- news that could not make it into the User's Guide as well as some
- important pieces of technical information that bear repeating here.
-
- MEMORY REQUIREMENTS. Undersea Adventure requires approximately 490KB
- of RAM in order to run. Even when there is adequate total RAM to run
- the program, there may be conflicts with other programs occupying
- memory. If you experience difficulty in running Undersea Adventure
- under these circumstances, please remove other memory resident programs
- from memory.
-
- LAPTOP/NOTEBOOK COMPUTER DISPLAYS. Undersea Adventure requires a color
- VGA monitor to display its high-resolution images. It will not work on
- the internal plasma or LCD monitors on laptop PCs. Most laptops,
- however, have a connector for an external monitor, and Undersea
- Adventure will work fine with your laptop hooked to an external VGA
- monitor. Undersea Adventure will run fine on certain laptop screens,
- such as the Toshiba 4400SXC, COMPAQ LTE's and the PC BRAND NB 486slx
- which have 256 shades of grey or color screens. The only problem will
- be that the right edge of the screen will be slightly cut off. This is
- due to the fact that Undersea Adventure runs in the extra high resolution
- VGA video mode of 360 x 480 pixels with 256 colors and most of the internal
- laptop screens can only show 320 pixels in width.
-
- EGA DISPLAYS. Undersea Adventure requires a VGA color monitor and
- therefore will not run on EGA monitors.
-
- MOUSE SUPPORT. Undersea Adventure takes great advantage of your mouse
- if you have one, but it does not require one. There are keyboard
- equivalents spelled out in the User's Guide which will allow you to
- enjoy Undersea Adventure without a mouse.
-
- NEW FEATURES. Some new and undocumented features are:
-
- - Music volume. You can change the level of music while sounds
- are being played in the program. The default level is 70. The
- recommended range is 50 to 80; the lower the number the softer
- the music volume. NOTE: this does not change the overall music
- volume; it is lowered only while digitized sound is being played.
- To turn music or sound off completely, Music and Sound must be
- set to OFF.*
-
- - Mouse sensitivity. The sensitivity of your mouse can be increased
- or decreased. The default sensitivity is 50. The recommended
- range is 25 to 100; the higher the number, the more sensitive
- and responsive your mouse movements.*
-
- * These settings are in the Undersea configuration text file,
- KA.CNF. Use a text editor or click on the Undersea Adventure
- Config icon in Windows to modify these settings. For further
- information about KA.CNF, see Appendix B, "Commonly Asked
- Questions", in your Undersea Adventure user's manual.
-
- - To step backwards along the data line in the Reference Section,
- press the Shift key and click a category button with your mouse.
- Clicking without pressing Shift moves you forward.
-
- - To turn off sound and music, type ALT-M (music) and/or ALT-S
- (sound). To turn them back on, press ALT-M and/or ALT-S.
-
- WINDOWS "SOUND DEVICE IN USE" MESSAGE. While using a Sound Blaster
- card and attempting to launch Undersea Adventure in Windows, you may
- get a message stating that your sound device is already in use. To
- remedy this, upgrade your SoundBlaster drivers for Windows. If you
- have a modem you can download the new drivers by either calling the
- Creative Labs' BBS directly or by calling the Knowledge Adventure BBS
- @(818) 248-0166 (N,8,1). If you do not have a modem, call our
- Technical Support Department at (818) 249-0212.
-
- TANDY SENSATION. The Undersea Adventure install program will not
- generate a Knowledge Adventure program group and icon if you run
- under Winmate - even if you said YES to the Windows question during
- install. Manually add the Undersea Adventure Icon to Winmate after
- installation is complete.
-
- If your are running Undersea Adventure from DOS, you will not hear
- digital sound during movies. If running Undersea Adventure from
- within Windows, you will hear digital sound during movies if you
- are using the new Tandy Sensation SoundBlaster compatible Windows
- drivers. If you do not have these drivers, and have a modem, you may
- download them from the Knowledge Adventure BBS (see above paragraph).
-
- COMPAQ PROLINEA. During INSTALL, press ENTER if you get a message
- stating that you do not have a VGA System.
-
- ROLAND. Call our BBS or contact our Technical Support Department
- for Roland drivers and assistance in setting up digital sound for a
- second sound card (numbers listed above).
-
- DIGISPEECH PORTABLE. If you are using the Digispeech PortAble Sound
- Plus, copy all 5 of the new BMASTER.* files from your Undersea
- Adventure directory to your DIGISPEECH directory.
-
- GRAVIS ULTRASOUND. Call our BBS or contact our Technical Support
- department to obtain Ultrasound drivers (numbers listed above). The
- Gravis Ultrasound requires a large driver to load its more realistic
- "wavetable" instruments to the sound card (about 20-25kb more than
- other sound cards). Consequently, you may have to free up additional
- memory in order to perform properly.
-
- SOUND SETUP. If you have difficulty successfully running sound
- setup, you may have selected the wrong sound card or you may have
- an I/O conflict with other cards in your computer. See Appendix B,
- "Commonly Asked Questions", in your User's Guide for information about
- troubleshooting and reconfiguring your system.
-
- PROAUDIO 16 BIT SOUND CARDS. If you have set the DMA channel to
- 5, 6 or 7 on the Proaudio side of your sound card, and the DMA
- channel on the Sound Blaster side to 0, 2 or 3: Install might not
- successfully run the digitized sound test and sound will be missing
- from the program. Choose "Change Sound Settings" and select the
- correct Sound Blaster side DMA channel (DMA 0, 2 or 3).
